Small Firm Practice Course

This course has been developed by the Law Society of British Columbia primarily to assist lawyers practicing alone or in small firms to review key practice management topics.  The course does not attempt to be a complete knowledge base for each topic covered, but rather attempts to capture highlights and to provide a review of core concepts.

Rule 3-28 of the Law Society Rules makes  the course mandatory for lawyers practicing in a “small firm” and requires those lawyers to complete the course within 6 months after commencing practice in a small firm setting. Although Law Society Rule 3-28(1)(b) provides that lawyers obligated to complete the Small Firm Practice Course must "certify to the Executive Director in a form approved by the Executive Director" that the course is complete, this requirement is satisifed simply by logging in to the CPD section of the LSBC website and recording the Small Firm Practice Course as complete - the LSBC monitors those submissions and makes sure that persons who are required to take the SFPC have reported completion there.

Lawyers who are not required to take the course as a mandatory condition of practice can nevertheless take the course for educational purposes and are entitled to claim CPD credit according to the time spent taking the course. Click here to find out more about taking the course for CPD credit.
